What is MLM (a.k.a. Network Marketing)?
MLM, also commonly called Network Marketing or Referral Marketing, is a system that not only compensates its salesforce for the sales they make, but also from the sales of others that they have recruited (also known as the “downline”) – this can go on for several levels of downlines.
To illustrate this example, let’s say A recruits B, B recruits C, and C recruits D. A makes a profit from his own sales, and also from the sales of B, C and D. B in turn gets a cut from his own sales and also from the sales of C and D, and so on.
MLM is an efficient and legitimate business model based on relationship-selling, rather than spending marketing dollars on advertising like a traditional business – even many big mutual fund and insurance companies use this model. MLM is not to be confused with pyramid schemes, which usually do not involve any real products, and are illegal in most countries.
